GREENWICH VILLAGE, Manhattan – Police looking for a man who tried to a rape a woman near a New York University dorm in Greenwich Village released surveillance video in hopes the public can identify the suspect.
The 20-year-old victim was walking in vicinity of 10th Street and Fifth Avenue at about 4 a.m. when a random stranger with a backpack approached her and placed her in a bear hug, police said. He proceeded to sexually assault her before she fought him off, according to the NYPD. She initially refused medical attention but was later brought to an area hospital.
The suspect appears to be between 25 to 35 years old, about 5 feet 8 inches tall. He was last seen wearing jeans, a short sleeve shirt and a dark baseball cap.
The video shows the alleged attacker on his cellphone walking on a well-lit sidewalk around the time of the assault.
NYU's Rubin Hall, which houses first-year students of the university, is located on the same block where the reported attack happened.
